Wisconsin Biodiesel in

Farm & Off-Road Applications

For good reason, the strongest supporters of biodiesel as an alternative to petroleum fuel come from the agriculture sector of our nation’s industry. It is America’s farmers, after all, who recognize great benefit in increasing our reliance upon biofuels as a “home grown” solution to our quest for energy independence.

Nationally, the United Soybean Board and the American Soybean Association took the lead in introducing biodiesel into the marketplace and were instrumental in the creation of the National Biodiesel Board. The Wisconsin Soybean Association is one of the founding members of the WBA, and its members are among the most vocal advocates for biodiesel in Wisconsin.

This support from farmers is reflected as well in the allied industries that make their living selling to America’s agribusiness. Many of the agricultural equipment manufacturers have been among the first to introduce biodiesel fuel into their equipment at the assembly line. CNH Case New Holland is one such firm that makes CaseIH and New Holland farm tractors at their plant in Racine, WI for distribution throughout the world. Racine County is the worldwide headquarters for the CaseIH brand, and the company has been there since 1842. They were recognized at this year’s National Biodiesel Board annual convention in San Antonio with the prestigious “Eye on Biodiesel” award for the New Holland brand’s leadership in promoting biodiesel use in their farm equipment.

In accepting the award, New Holland Manager of Industry Affairs Gene Hemphill said, “It’s a great honor to be able to receive an award for something that you have a great passion for, being backed by a company like New Holland that shares the same passion, and for having a great relationship with Joe Jobe and the National Biodiesel Board that makes such a passion contagious.”

In addition to CNH, numerous other equipment manufacturers have researched biodiesel and have warranted it for use in their equipment to be used as an alternative to petroleum diesel. In many cases, the farm equipment manufacturers also build the equipment used for other off-road applications including the construction, forestry, and heavy industrial trades. This “passion” for biodiesel carries over here as well, and biodiesel usage is becoming more prevalent in these areas. From among biodiesel’s many benefits, these operators particularly appreciate biodiesel for its reduction of noxious fumes and for the contribution it makes to our domestic economy. It is in fact quite common to find heavy equipment running on biodiesel hard at work building biodiesel refineries here in the United Sates. It’s all a contribution toward achieving energy independence and fueling our domestic economy through the benefit of biodiesel.
